For some time I have been doing several studies on the Grenada ShortKnee as an artistic subject, and have decided to show the work publicly, even though it is a work in progress. ICON, Carnival on canvas, the ShortKnee as Art is scheduled to open for one week only – February 25 to March 4 at the Grenada Arts Council’s new space this year, 9 Young Street in Saint George’s.
On show will be a collection of over 30 works, including my first ShortKnee work – a soft wall sculpture on loan from a private collector, plus Chantuelle Talks, eight works, part of a display at the Grenada Pavilion of the Shanghai Expo 2010, China.
Once a disguise and a way to compromise, the fusion of West African Egungun and French theatre elements that has become theShortKnee of today, is, in this artist’s opinion, the iconic instrument of the history of Grenada, and a subject worthy of vigorous visual artistic study.
