The first time I read Hemingway’s Cuban novel was at school, a long long time ago. By the time Hemingway (re)crossed my path, I had begun to feel creatively evaporated. Enter Caboverde’s neocubist fish images, and Hemingway’s words bubbling in my head, I began painting a series of red fish. On Day 85, Santiago catches a marlin, which he eventually loses to sharks. With luck, my red fish will not attract sharks. Refuse defeat at every turn is the title of the image below, one of three submitted to the Grenada Arts Council’s 48th Annual Show, 9 Young Street.
