TUESDAY 5 AUGUST

Last night, we were in bed early enough, but did not really get to sleep, because there was a loud thunderstorm, with driving rain and lightning. And it was cold. It was really a dark and stormy night… and it lasted for over three hours.

Earlier, we had gone to visit the church on the next hill, Our Lady of the Snows, and on the way back down, we realised that the clouds were setting up for rain. Being so far up, or rather so close to the clouds, when they or the fog, decide to move in, they do so quickly, and are so thick, that you really feel the need for a knife. One minute you can see your destination over the next hill, and the next minute, it is completely shrouded in fog…. And you panic. But only for a moment, because Lozje knows his mountains, and has a compass in his head.

In any direction, a walk from our artcamp at Velika Planina is balm for the soul. Four days in this unbelievably serene place, and I am so in love with the crisp air, the 360° vistas of alps fringed with pines, and alps playing peekaboo with the clouds, even the fields dotted with brown and white cows, that twice a day a walk is required to charge my batteries, and to remind me that there is a god.

On one such walk, we came upon this memorial. On 19 March 1944, during World War II, a B-17 crashed on a mountainside in Slovenia.

It has not been all play and playing tourist. I have been working at my craft. We all have. Yesterday, it was nice and sunny, then, blam! Rain. It rained a good bit during the day, so we had to occupy a table in the dining room to get some work done… not the same as being outside. But today was a lot better, never mind that the temperature today started off around 15°C.

Lunch today from the restaurant Domzalski Dom http://www.domzalskidom.si was Pečenica and Zelje, sausage and sour cabbage. Supper was Burek – pastry filled with fresh cow’s cheese and sour cow’s milk. Wonderful comfort food when the weather turns cold. And wouldn’t you know the weather usually clears just after we have dined, so we are encouraged to walk off the meal. Good healthy living!
