Pulling it all together in time for the opening of the Open Spaces final exhibition was a bit like pulling teeth, and hair and fingernails. The other artists had their acts together, but somehow, I was still waffling and rethinking (over-thinking, really) and experiencing highs and lows to the point of vertigo.
Eventually I settled on what you see in the opening image… I culled 80 images to show just a handful representative of my thoughts and various techniques used. I still have two last works to accomplish: (i) using rocks from the nearby river and reproducing some of Grenada’s indigenous rock art and (ii) using cow manure and the milk paint, plus the last of my material from the recycling centre to create a local mixed media work. With luck, I’ll finish both.
Melanie Gerber of the online newspaper ‘anzeiger von saanen’ was first on scene to view the exhibition and to interview the artists and organisers. Of my work Inspired by the environment, she wrote,
Suelin Low Chew Trung and Prensnelo, both artists from the Caribbean, prove that artists come to Feutersoey and return with many impressions. “I wanted to bring something from Grenada and mix things from here,” said Suelin Low Chew Tung. Thus, cultural elements from the Saanenland flowed into her work, cows can be seen in many pictures, but also people on the roadside, “cow-drivers”, as the artist calls them. The artist from Grenada was also experimenting with material: she mixed the paint she had made at home with milk from the Lädeli in Feutersoey and used it to paint.
