Cinnamon, clove, ginger, lemongrass, moringa, nutmeg, sorrel, and turmeric are some bush teas we drink to ward off illness, to feel better, and with a liberal lash of spirits, especially in the spiced sorrel version, to keep our spirits high.
I’ve used those herbs and spices to scald, soak and stain fabric teabags which form part of my installation Foreigner Within, in the Grenada Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in April.
This caddy of turmeric and ginger-stained teabags, if I may use a collective noun, displays text reworded from The Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde, about her struggle with breast cancer.
Fun fact: Lorde’s mother Linda Gertrude Belmar, was born on Carriacou. Lorde visited Grenada in December 1983 and she wrote Grenada revisited: An interim report about her short visit.
More to come.
