A plain white towel covers the entire head of the ShortKnee. This headdress is referred to as being ‘in sheep’s head, a simpler and economically preferred version of a starch-stiffened and wired cloth headdress, a ‘crown’ that is referred to as ‘in goat’s head’. Both headdresses reference West African animal head masks.

West African masquerade traditions fused with French carnavale elements to produce the ShortKnee, my exploration of which, focuses on translations of other artists’ works featuring pierrot figures, or those dealing with war, migration, desolation and isolation, elements which birthed an unique and iconic masquerade. In Goat’s Head is influenced by Rufino Tamayo.
