The capital of Grenada, Saint George’s, celebrates its 300th anniversary this year, so the Grenada Arts Council’s theme this year reflected that. So what do I do? Well……… I have been working on (I am a victim of multi-art-tasking) visualising the history of Grenada from discovery to 1900, and have found all sorts of images and references that can be reasonably easily made into visuals. So my entries for this year were a triptych of the lost streets of Saint George’s (Shelburne Street, Pradine Street and Fort Street) and George Washington’s facebook page…well if he had access to social media.
In terms of history, Captain La Grenade wrote President GW a letter in 1791 asking for asylum for 60,000 free coloured persons of Grenada and their slaves to be allowed to relocate to the southern US states to live. GW responded with a ‘sure come on up to the land flowing with milk and honey’. Jefferson was not happy about that at all. I have not found so far, any reference on whether La Grenade took him up on that offer. More to come…
I have several other artworks in various stages of undress, with the end result being a photo book of Grenada history in Art. Also, see my link to the book that was published to commemorate the this year’s show, and you can see my lost streets there.
