At the invitation of Barcelona fine artist Josep Cañada, poster art taken from my March 2011 exhibition ICON: ShortKnee as Art has been shown at the second Corbera d’Ebre Biennal d’Art (from April 13 to July 3) in Tarragona Spain.

Poster art based on Panel 2 of  ICON translation of Guernica
ICON was a translation study series of the Grenada ShortKnee, that I presented in 53 works at the gallery of the Grenada Arts Council 9 Young Street this past March. One of the studies, an 8-panel translation in brown paper, acrylics, tempera and oil pastel of Picasso’s Guernica, was used to create poster art for peace for submission to the Biennal d’Art. This translation of war in a small country captured in brilliant colour as opposed to the original work in black and white tones, uses ShortKnee characters and speaks to the restrictions placed upon Grenada’s artists, creating in a space without institutional support, nor appreciation for the importance of visual artists as documentors of Grenada’s history and culture. See my blog with images of the Guernica translation. http://artstung.com/?p=52

Corbera d’Ebre is a town which was destroyed during the Battle of the Ebro in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). The ruined town, including the old Church of St Peter on Montera Hill, has been kept as a reminder of the tragedy of war and hosts the international Corbera d’Ebre Biennal d’Art. This is the second Corbera d’Ebre Biennal d’Art at which my work has been shown.
In 2008, Irepresented Grenada at the UNESCO Andorra sponsored 1st International Art Camp – Colours for the Planet in Ordino, Andorra. I created my first international ShortKnee work as part of an Ordino corporate funded public art programme at the invitation of the programme’s resident artist, Cuban Francisco Rivero. http://artcampcolorsplaneta.blogspot.com/2008/08/i-left-my-heart-in-andorra-suelin-low.html

At the Art Camp, I met Josep Cañada and Tarragonian ceramicist Joan Panisello Chavarri. Josep is a fine artist whose exhibitions include the Biennial Miro Foundation in Barcelona, Nardo Gallery Buenos Aires, Museo del Ebro, Tortosa Tarragona among others. Josep is part of Zero Mig, an artistic studio in Corbera d’Ebre. http://www.poblevell.cat/en/intro.htm. Joan is internationally considered as one of the most outstanding ceramists for originality of his shapes and varied colouring (more than 8000 different samples). Over the last 25 years, he has shown in over 160 exhibitions in five continents, and has been featured in 500 publications. http://www.panisello.net
